St Michael at the North Gate – Heritage Refurbishment & Conservation

Crawford Construction was proud to undertake a programme of refurbishment, conservation and repair works at St Michael at the North Gate, one of Oxford’s most historic landmarks.

At the heart of the church is its remarkable Saxon Tower, dating from around 1040 and widely recognised as the oldest surviving building in Oxford. Carrying out works within such a historically significant setting required a sensitive approach, respecting the original fabric and character of the building throughout.

Our programme included a range of internal and external refurbishment works, traditional lime mortar repairs and repointing, masonry and stonework repairs, roofing and external works, carpentry and joinery and general building improvements.

Traditional materials and appropriate conservation techniques were used where required, with particular care taken around the church’s historic stonework, architectural detailing and stained glass.

The project is a great example of Crawford Construction’s experience working with historic and listed buildings across Oxford and Oxfordshire, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern construction expertise to maintain and preserve important buildings for future generations.
